Her story is one of resilience, perseverance, and determination –
a testament to the power of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
Rosalinda's journey is a testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome adversity. Growing up in Modesto with her two younger brothers, she experienced the best of both country farm life and city living, thanks to her extended family in Hilmar and Stevenson. Despite the challenges she faced, including a separated home, she found solace in her family ties and a strong support network.
As she navigated her early years, Rosalinda faced painful experiences at the hands of others, but she refused to let those experiences define her. She made conscious choices to avoid toxic behaviors, such as drinking and smoking, and instead focused on building a strong foundation for herself.
Rosalinda's passion for sports led her to participate in cheerleading, JV basketball, and softball, where she discovered her strength lay not in being the best, but in giving her all. Her first daughter arrived as a way to escape a difficult situation, and though her marriage was short-lived, she became a single mother determined to provide for her child.
After completing vocational training in medical assisting, Rosalinda struggled to secure employment, leading her to return to college. However, she encountered more challenges, including rape and abuse at the hands of a stalker who continued to haunt her long after the abuse ended. The trauma of these experiences was overwhelming, and despite the support of loved ones, it was more than many could bear in the early 1990s.
As a result, Rosalinda found herself homeless, working a minimum wage job at a retail store to make ends meet. With the help of a Stanislaus County program, she secured temporary housing and downpayment assistance. She continued to work hard, using the payphone at a nearby gas station to stay connected with loved ones and eventually met someone who would become the father of her three additional children.
Despite this new chapter in her life beginning with her move to Ceres in 2002, Rosalinda faced more challenges when her long-term partner left while she was pregnant. The subsequent bankruptcy and struggles to balance work, childcare, and household expenses were daunting. During this time, she leaned on community services, food banks, churches, and internal resilience.
In 2011, Rosalinda took matters into her own hands by starting her own business. When that venture didn't take off immediately, she secured a seasonal agricultural job as an Office Staff & Logistics Supervisor. Although it paid only slightly above minimum wage and required long hours, it was a step forward.
Tragedy struck in 2013 when Rosalinda was involved in a major car accident when another car ran a red light that left her with a concussion and traumatic brain injury and also injuried her mother. As she struggled to regain her memory and basic functions, she knew she had to break free from the cycle of low-paying jobs and find a new independence. An opportunity at a local community college as the Dean's secretary presented itself, allowing her traditional hours and a set salary. The first step out of the cycle of poverty.
Today, Rosalinda continues to thrive as a Student Success Specialist at the same college, dedicated to helping students of all ages overcome their own challenges and make informed decisions about their futures. Her story is one of resilience, perseverance, and determination – a testament to the power of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
Today, Rosalinda is proud to say that three of her children have graduated from college, with one currently pursuing further education. Her children have also blessed her with three grandchildren, bringing joy and fulfillment to her life. She also remains close to her family, including both parents, both brothers and her niece and nephew.
